There are many reasons you need a professional headshot, but I'll share what I think are the top three reasons a professional headshot is necessary in todays world:
1. For your Linkedin profile. Linkedin is your online professional profile that is always there for anyone that is going to do any type of business interaction with you to see. Linkedin has 128 million members in the US alone (as of April 2016) and gets 2 new members per second. That's a huge audience and an amazing opportunity to show your professional stats. Linkedin is used by people searching for a new job, companies looking to hire new employees, businesses looking to do business with individuals, sales and marketing professionals, and any other professional service you can imagine. Your first impression image, otherwise known as your profile picture WILL have an impact. The impact will let others know if you are a professional or an amatuer, a professional headshot will definitely put you into the category of "professional".
2. If you are looking for a new job or to make a career move. I recently read an article about how recruiters won't even look at a resume if the headshot appears amatuer. That speaks volumes as to how important the investment is in a headshot if you are in the market for a new job or career move. If you've never had a professional headshot and are out of work and not wanting to spend the extra money on a headshot then you may want to think of it as an investment in your future career. The money spent on a headshot may help you get a new job sooner or at least get you an interview before the guy with the amatuer profile picture. It's a small price to pay to get your foot in the door.
3. Social media is not going anywhere anytime soon. Someday I'm sure there will be something new that comes along and we will all be saying, "remember when we used to use Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin, back in the old days". For now, they are not only here to stay, they are becoming more and more essential to finding a job, running a business and spreading the word about anything and everything. With social media having such a large presence on the internet, if you own any type of business or are in a sales or marketing position, a solid first impression image is crucial. Put your best foot "and face" forward and put out the image that will LET everyone know you take your company or the company you represent seriously. You only get one chance at a first impression and nowadays that happens even before they meet you!
